When is the best time to visit China?
For most first-time visitors, spring and autumn are the easiest seasons to travel, especially from April to May and September to October.
Temperatures are generally more comfortable for exploring cities and outdoor attractions, while spring landscapes and autumn colors can make some regions particularly beautiful.
But China is enormous.
The best time to visit Beijing is not necessarily the best time to visit Yunnan, Xinjiang or Harbin.
In fact, there is almost always somewhere in China worth visiting.
Here's how to choose the right time for your trip.
Spring in China: March to May
Spring is one of the best seasons to explore China.
Temperatures become warmer across much of the country, flowers begin to bloom and many destinations are comfortable for walking and sightseeing.
Where to go in spring
Beijing
Spring is a good time for the Forbidden City, hutongs and the Great Wall before the hottest summer weather arrives.
Hangzhou & Jiangnan
Gardens, lakes, tea plantations and traditional water towns look particularly beautiful in spring.
Yunnan
Destinations such as Dali and Lijiang combine historic towns with mountains and outdoor experiences.
Guilin & Yangshuo
The combination of karst mountains, rivers and countryside makes spring a beautiful time for slower travel through southern China.
Spring is best for:
- First-time visitors
- Cultural journeys
- City sightseeing
- Gardens and flowers
- Hiking
- Photography
Summer in China: June to August
Summer is hot and humid in many major Chinese cities, and it coincides with the domestic school holiday period.
But that doesn't mean you should avoid China entirely.
Instead, choose destinations that shine in summer.
Where to go in summer
Xinjiang
Summer brings green grasslands, alpine lakes and long daylight hours.
Places such as Ili and Sayram Lake can be spectacular at this time of year.
Western Sichuan
High mountains, grasslands and Tibetan cultural regions offer a completely different side of China.
Yunnan
Its varied elevations make parts of the province popular for escaping extreme summer heat.
Qinghai
High-altitude lakes, grasslands and vast landscapes make summer one of the most practical times to explore the region.
Summer is particularly suitable for travelers interested in nature, road trips and outdoor adventures.
Autumn in China: September to November
If we had to recommend one season to a first-time visitor, autumn would be one of our top choices.
There is a Chinese expression for this time of year:
秋高气爽 — qiū gāo qì shuǎng
It describes those beautiful autumn days when the sky feels high and clear and the air is crisp and refreshing.
Across many destinations, September and October offer comfortable conditions for city exploration, hiking and photography.
Where to go in autumn
Beijing
Explore imperial architecture, walk through historic neighborhoods and hike along the Great Wall in cooler weather.
Zhangjiajie
Autumn can be an excellent season for exploring its dramatic sandstone landscapes.
Sichuan
From Chengdu to the mountains of western Sichuan, autumn brings very different landscapes within a single province.
Xinjiang
Parts of northern Xinjiang turn golden during autumn, creating some of China's most dramatic seasonal scenery.
Shanghai & Jiangnan
Cooler weather makes exploring Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou much more comfortable on foot.
One important thing to know
Early October is one of China's major domestic travel periods around the National Day holiday.
Popular attractions, trains and hotels can become significantly busier.
If your dates are flexible, traveling in September, later October or early November can give you a more relaxed experience.
Winter in China: December to February
Winter is underrated.
For travelers who don't mind cold weather, it can offer experiences that simply aren't possible during other seasons.
Where to go in winter
Harbin
The city is famous internationally for its spectacular winter ice and snow experiences.
Beijing
Cold, clear winter days can offer a completely different atmosphere at the Forbidden City and Great Wall.
Yunnan
Some lower-altitude destinations remain relatively mild compared with northern China.
Sichuan
Winter is also a great excuse to slow down in Chengdu with teahouses, hotpot and Sichuan cuisine.
Winter can also mean fewer visitors at some major cultural attractions outside the busiest holiday periods.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Zhangjiajie?

So, What Is the Best Month to Visit China?
If you're visiting China for the first time and want to see destinations such as:
Beijing → Xi'an → Chengdu → Zhangjiajie → Shanghai
we would particularly recommend considering:
April, May, September and October.
But the better question may actually be:
What part of China do you want to experience?
China stretches from tropical regions in the south to deserts, grasslands, high mountains and snowy northern cities.
There is no single perfect month for the entire country.
There is simply a best destination for every season.
